Why gum health matters

Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common chronic conditions in adults — and it's strongly linked to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and pregnancy complications. Healthy gums aren't optional; they're essential.

Frequently asked questions

Is gum disease reversible?

The earliest stage (gingivitis) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. More advanced periodontitis isn't curable but can be controlled with treatment and maintenance.

How often will I need to come in if I have gum disease?

Most periodontal maintenance patients are on a 3–4 month cleaning schedule, compared to every 6 months for healthy patients.

Will gum treatment hurt?

Scaling and root planing is done with local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. You may have some tenderness for a day or two afterward, but most patients tolerate it very well.
