What counts as a dental emergency?

• Severe, persistent tooth pain — especially with swelling or fever
• Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth — every minute counts; keep it moist (milk or saliva) and get to us fast
• Broken or fractured tooth — particularly if it's sharp, painful, or bleeding
• Lost filling or crown — usually not an emergency, but call so we can advise
• Dental abscess — a serious infection that needs prompt antibiotic treatment
• Soft-tissue injuries — lacerations of the lips, gums, cheeks, or tongue

What to do until you get to us

For a knocked-out tooth, gently rinse it (do not scrub), and either tuck it back in the socket or put it in milk. For pain, take ibuprofen (if you can tolerate it) and apply a cold compress to your cheek. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums — it can burn the tissue. Then call us.
